Local SEO for Dental Practices: The Complete Playbook

Dental practices have one of the most predictable local-SEO opportunities in any industry. The keywords are obvious. The competition is mediocre. The local pack is dominated by 3 results. And yet most dental practices haven't claimed the win.

Here's the complete playbook.

1. Google Business Profile is half the battle. Before your website, before content, before backlinks — fix your Google Business Profile. Complete every field. Add 30+ photos of your office, equipment, team, and (with patient permission) before/after work. Post weekly updates. Respond to every review within 48 hours. The local pack is heavily weighted on GBP signals — under-optimized GBPs lose to mediocre ones with attentive owners.

2. Service-page architecture. Each procedure you offer gets its own URL: `/dental-implants-overland-park`, `/teeth-whitening-overland-park`, `/invisalign-overland-park`. Yes, location in the slug. Yes, even though it feels repetitive. This is how you rank for the highest-intent commercial terms.

3. Schema markup beyond LocalBusiness. Add Dentist schema specifically (more specific than LocalBusiness gives you better rich results). Add Service schema per offering. Add FAQPage schema on your FAQ. Add Review schema on testimonials. This is how you win the "knowledge panel" expansion + rich-result eligibility.

4. Reviews — quantity AND velocity. Google weights review velocity (how many you get per month) almost as heavily as total count. Set up a post-appointment SMS that asks for a Google review at the moment of highest satisfaction (right after a successful procedure). Aim for 8-15 new reviews per month. Practices that maintain this cadence consistently outrank competitors with 5x more total reviews accumulated over years.

5. Local-link earning. The biggest local-SEO lever no one uses: sponsor local events, kids' sports teams, school PTAs. Each sponsorship typically comes with a backlink from the organization's site. Five $250 sponsorships per year = 5 high-trust local backlinks. Outperforms paid link campaigns 10-to-1.

6. Patient stories with structured data. "Sarah came to us with severe dental anxiety…" Patient story articles with Article schema rank for long-tail commercial keywords ("dental anxiety treatment overland park") that pure service pages don't capture.

7. Insurance + accepted carriers — as content, not just a list. Build out individual pages: `/delta-dental-insurance-overland-park`, `/cigna-dental-overland-park`. Each ranks for "does X insurance cover Y in [city]." Massive long-tail traffic that direct competitors ignore.

8. Pricing pages. Yes, publish ranges. Yes, even though every other dentist refuses to. The result: you rank for "[procedure] cost [city]" — some of the highest-intent commercial search terms in dentistry. The visitors who don't fit your price range self-disqualify; the visitors who do fit are pre-qualified. Net effect: 30-40% higher booking-to-show rate.

9. Mobile speed. Dental searches are 80% mobile. Sub-1s LCP is table stakes. Use Cloudflare Pages or Vercel hosting. Compress images aggressively (AVIF/WebP). Defer non-critical JS. Score 95+ on PageSpeed Insights mobile, every page, every audit.

10. Local content calendar. One article per month, focused on local context: "What to do for a dental emergency in Overland Park" "Best after-hours dental care in Lee's Summit" — content that intersects your service with local geography. Compounds slowly but ranks forever.

Done in this order, most dental practices reach top-3 local-pack visibility in 4-6 months. Most agencies will quote 12-18 months. They're padding the timeline; the work itself is well-understood.
